Project Summary / Description:
Malawi faces high deforestation due to opening of agricultural land and charcoal making which lead to soil degradation and negative climate change effects that lead food insecurity in Southern Malawi. Therefore, Imagine Africa will scale up 967,000 ha of agroforest trees for five years. Agroforestry improves soil fertility, soil organic matter, partial shade, resistance to drought, weed control, soil cover, carbon sequestration and soil erosion control that will contribute to increased agricultural productivity while conserving natural resources. Imagine Afrika will scale up agroforestry through farmer managed natural regeneration (FMNR). The advantage of FMNR is that it is easy to do and requires little technical training, knowledge, or timely provision of costly inputs. Further, natural regenerating trees are healthy plants selected by nature with strong root systems that can withstand climate shocks. They are well adapted to the local ecology with inherent resistance to drought, fire, browsing, pests and diseases.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
This project actively includes women, the youth, vulnerable and affected communities in teaching them in agroforestry to create food forests, sustainable farms and increase carbon sink. Using lead farmers (individual farmers who have been elected by the community to perform technology specific farmer-to-farmer extension and are trained in the technology including green manure/cover crops) the project reaches out to all farmers in communities affected or likely to be affected by climatic changes such as Chikwawa and Nsanje districts. Sensitization meetings to orient the community on the Lead Farmer Concept and Participatory Rural Appraisals (PRAs) to identify problems and solutions are done before electing Lead Farmers to assist in scaling up of green manure/cover crops to ensure inclusion and participation from the community. In Malawi over 80% are farmers and most of the people involved in farming are smallholder farmers and rely on household labour for farm activities this involves women. Women in Malawi play an important role in agriculture and they constitute 70% of full-time farmers, work and produce for family consumption. Compared to men, women are also burdened with household duties while men focus on productive and community roles only. This project is therefore vital for burden reduction since it is cheaper, saves time, labour and yields more produce while conserving natural resources. Changes in the climate can affect quality of land thereby affecting productivity. This leads to food insecurity and financial vulnerability for families that depend solely on farming for their daily needs.
