Project Summary / Description:
In December of 2016, I participated in COP 21 for the signing of the Paris Agreement. As someone who has been a thought-leader and practitioner in early-stage technology commercialization and researched over 1600 incubator/accelerator models to understand where they fall short of delivering on intended goals, the question that the agreement brought up was How do we ensure that the technological innovation needed to meet these goals has an opportunity to contribute in the agreed upon timeframe given how disconnected, inefficient, and not optimized to meet these goals our technology commercialization and deployment process is (understanding that there are other key elements needed such as policy in addition to technological innovation, however this type of innovation will need to play a key role if these goals are to be reached by 2050). This question was the impetus for launching Innovation 4.4 and bringing StartupNectar, the energy/water/materials science incubator I launched in 2012 under the Innovation 4.4 umbrella with a higher mandate to address global climate goals. Based on 12 years of deep expertise in the commercialization process and the market failures that produce the net loss in the system ‚ loss of resources, capital, IP, human capital/potential, Innovation 4.4 has developed innovative interventions to reduce that net loss in the system and optimize the return on technological innovation for society and the planet. Each program is based on identifying key barriers to commercialization and deployment and designing creative structures that incentivize all stakeholders to participate in accelerating the process.

Mission Statement:
The mission of Innovation 4.4 is to accelerates the commercialization & global deployment¬†of technologies most critical to meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a global community. Innovation 4.4 leverages 12 years of experience as a leader working with clean technology startups and insights about the technology incubation/acceleration process towards building programs that can optimize global adoption of solutions that matter. Our programs focus on 1. Selection of technologies that most effectively enable reaching global sustainability goals through identification and due diligence, 2. Accelerating the global deployment of most impactful technologies and ensuring access to clean energy to 100% of the world‚ population, 3. Building, enabling and optimizing support and funding eco-systems for innovations most needed by humanity. Our programs are specifically designed to address a. an inefficient technology development and deployment process that impedes addressing key challenges where those technologies can make a significant contribution, b. a sub-optimal process for cutting edge technology adoption by industry leaders, c. a disconnected and inefficient funding/investment eco-system for early stage clean technology startups, d. a slow and expensive process for accessing markets across borders. Startups and growth enterprises often fail to access strategic market entry opportunities due to their time and resource intensive nature. When technologies are deployed in new markets, these efforts are typically fragmented across industries, and their potential value to society and the planet are not fully realized. Given the urgency to solve climate challenges, optimizing innovation is essential.
