Project Summary / Description:

The purpose of the Greener Schools project is to increase awareness on environmental crisis we are facing targeting the Youth, and also to encourage the Youth to collectively participate in conserving our planet. 

Malawi is facing a deforestation crisis of which we are losing about 40000 hectares of trees annually. Most of the trees being cut are mainly for biomass, Clearing land for agriculture and trees for furniture/building purposes. Deforestation is one aspect of the project, sharing ideas with the students on how we can reverse the crisis and how better can we act for a better Greener Malawi. 

Another area of which Greener Schools is tackling in on pollution, for example plastic pollution and now mask pollution. We are sharing ideas with the students on how we can create cleaner and beautiful spaces within us to curb pollution crisis.

The Greener Schools project in under the Greener Malawi Initiative (GMI) of which ISEC Malawi founded to implementing across Malawi. GMI will go beyond schools we want to reach out to each and every Malawian possible so that we all work together and not leave anyone behind in fighting climate change injustices, deforestation and pollution in Malawi.

Malawian youth are mostly unaware of climate change injustices and other environmental issues mainly because of lack of access to information as most of Malawian youth have no access to technologies that can easily give them access and there also are not alot of projects targeting them to install in them knowledge on environmental issues . Concurrently Malawian youth are under represented in such important issues because there are no means for them to voice out their ideas and concerns.

Under Greener Schools project we are targeting students in secondary schools and community day schools and creating awareness in them and also having discussions with them on environmental issues such as Climate change, deforestation, pollution and renewable energy use. We are encouraging them to use their voices to spread awareness on these topics to their families, friends and communities and also encouraging them to take steps in creating a better and Greener Malawi.
