Project Summary / Description:
Jaza started in 2015 on Pemba Island, Tanzania to provide an affordable, clean source of lighting to displace the use of kerosene lamps and help customers charge phones locally. Kerosene usage cost customers more than $15/week, makes households sick due to carbon emissions, and phone charging required last-mile customers hours of travel each week to the nearest solar store. Jaza was developed to bring clean energy access to every last-mile community, and provide the tools for children to study, families to communicate, businesses to operate, and communities to grow.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Energy Hubs, which are Jaza's solar shops in rural communities, are operated by locals within the remote communities Jaza works in. Jaza recruits two female attendants from each community to operate the Energy Hubs and provide services and also recruits a team of agents (typically 2-5) to sell products on a commission basis. This creates employment in last-mile communities for impoverished workers in remote communities, where there is typically a lack of employment, especially in the service / technological industry. Energy Hub attendants are female and they are managed by a team of female field staff. This creates employment, education, and leadership for women in remote communities, where they are otherwise underprivileged and unable to work. Jaza has an extensive female attendant development program that trains women in remote communities skills in solar technology, customer service, IT, sales, management, financial management, and more. Exceptional attendants are promoted to field managers which further creates employment, education, and empowerment.
