Project Summary / Description:
The purpose of this project is to advocate for strong social protection policies and work with communities to find feasible solutions to eliminate the use of carbon-intensive energy technology. We have been working closely with street vendor communities since 2019 in urban areas in Indonesia to provide renewable energy as an alternative solution for their business operation. Street vendors who operate on public streets, alleys, and public roads previously use diesel generators or steal electricity to electrify their stalls causing additional pollution to already polluted cities. We then identify electricity charging stations as alternative energy-efficient solutions to reduce their environmental impacts. This project was formed due to the necessity for actions that deal with sustainably and inclusivity in managing technology to provide benefits both for the environment and the people. We think that it is important to empower actors responsible for making decisions that could drive a sustainable future.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
This project generally empowers traditionally underrepresented and marginalised communities (in this case, majorly women, youths, and vulnerable low-income street vendors) by ensuring a collaborative and participatory approach to project delivery, provision of relevant information and sensitisation on the multiple benefits of the project, and eventual clean energy access to support their businesses. Through these approaches, the street vendors who are predominantly women, youths, and vulnerable low-income earners are given a sense of belonging and empowered to participate in the energy transition in an equitable manner. There are other specific ways through which the project empowers the categories of people under reference. The first is to direct the street vendors to designated locations where they can operate legally with secure and reliable electricity connections. The second is that we have provided them with an education and information about renewable energy, particularly solar energy as a cleaner energy source. We have also educated them about the energy mix contained in the national grid where energy sourced from coal dominates the mix. The last is the discussion about the beneficial use of cleaner energy sources for their products. For example, if they use electricity sourced from solar panel systems, they may be able to market their products as a ‚ green product‚ and sell it at a higher price. This project empowers these communities by providing access to renewable energy to improve their productivity in supporting the cities‚ informal economy. Our work impacts Goal 7, Goal 12, and Goal 13 of the UN SDGs.

Mission Statement:
Just Transition Network is working to empower underrepresented communities and address the issue of inequality in low-carbon transition through research and projects. We aim to achieve measurable, meaningful impacts and leverage strategic global partnerships for energy cooperation. Our motto is "no one left behind" by leveraging justice and ethical concerns in practices, decision-making and policy choices impacting marginalised and underrepresented communities in the Global South. We are not just educating people on energy transition, but also working closely with technology providers to provide equity and justice perspectives into their business practice. We also aim to promote inclusive participation of the Global South representative in international climate change and energy policy through dialogue, academic publication and workshop participation. Our consultants are based in Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand and the US. Our projects have been implemented in Indonesia and Japan, and our research has focused on Southeast Asia and Sub Saharan Africa.
