Project Summary / Description:

KPI was inspired by the company‚ lead detection dog, Bjorn. The owner, Michaela Hager, was a CDL hazmat hauler of Jet A fuel for wildland fire aviation airplanes. Her traveling canine was investigating a minor spill during the work day. This inspired further research in canine uses in protecting our environment. After fire season ended, Bjorn and Michaela traveled to a training facility with a pipeline leak detection program. Bjorn, Michaela, and KPI‚ second canine, Yara, were tested and certified for pipeline leak detection.

This leak detection system involves a novel odorant injected in an oil or gas pipeline. The line is pressurized and the dogs can detect leaks emitted from buried pipelines. These dogs can detect pinhole leaks and cracks in pipelines that modern technology isn‚ t sensitive enough to find.

Although this odorant system is effective, it is not appropriate for high consequence/class 4 areas. I would like to explore more innovative options based off of this current detection system. With the appropriate odorant, canines could detect greenhouse gas leaks in enclosed spaces, fuel/gas transport, and distribution centers. 
This also would allow canines to detect on one singular novel odor instead of a bouquet of scents. There are dogs capable of detecting odors such as mercaptan but odorants like mercaptan have a high oxidation rate thus canine accuracy rate is decreased.
Innovations in oil and gas leak detection have been primarily motivated by companies seeking to meet help pipeline companies meet regulations. Oil and gas pipeline companies provide the highest pay for this detection system thus motivation to explore further applications of this system have not been pursued in this industry.
