Project Summary / Description:
We accelerate nature-based solutions for African smallholder farmers‚ to help combat and reverse climate change. By incorporating regenerative agriculture, we transform degenerated farms into organic, climate positive assets. Our highly adaptable, species diverse, agroforestry model builds climate resilience in rural communities. For this solution to have global impact, it needs to be scalable and gender equitable. With help from modern technology, we can empower millions of farmers, localising food production, securing healthy food & nutrition and substantially reducing emissions & waste. TreeKenya is a circular solution backed by climate-smart technology connecting smallholder farmers to accredited organic, carbon and financial markets.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
TreeKenya works to build climate resilience and long term prospects with African farming communities. Majority of the participants and beneficiaries live in extreme poverty and on the frontline of climate change. As a business for impact, we believe inclusivity and diversity are intrinsic for a successful, sustainable enterprise. At each level: local farmer, local NGO, regional management, national management we focus on building capacity and developing in-house skill sets. Our 'bottom-up' approach is driven by the farmers themselves so that they are the beneficiaries of their own work and initiatives. The initiative will also concentrate on mainstreaming gender equality. ‚ Socially modified crops‚ provide equal opportunity for men & women, young & old. From the baseline plan, we developed gender specific indicators, using primary & secondary data aimed at understanding the context to monitor, evaluate and achieve the gender goals. To maximise impact, we like to assess the needs of all the beneficiaries before we aim to meet them. Our Gender Action Plan (GAP) includes gender specific programme outcomes, actions, monitoring measures, key performance indicators, timings, roles and responsibilities. The GAP also includes detail on any training requirements and resource gaps. Once identified, training and capacity development is rolled out to relevant staff and associates, extension workers and wider stakeholders. The appointment of individuals responsible for GAP will help ensure this a reliable implementation and monitoring process.
