Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
When we build healthy soils there are a multitude of benefits that create social and economic justice. The Farm Bureau reported that bankruptcies amongst farmers are up 20% from last year, marking an eight-year high. The average age of a U.S. farmer is 58 years old and running a successful and stable business seems impossible to many with the current state of the food system and farmland itself. A major component are changes in weather patterns that cause drought, flooding, wildfire, and freezing. Compounded by brittle environments degraded by decades of conventional management, the result is a growing number of farmers experiencing profit losses so significant they lose their livelihood. There is a body of case studies showing that transitioning to regenerative agriculture ultimately becomes more profitable (key reasons include increasing resilience to changing weather and reducing the cost of inputs). Regenerating soil also increases the longevity of the land and natural resources farms depend on, meaning the farm can be stewarded and abundant in perpetuity. Creating operational resilience and economic prosperity is at the center of keeping the ‚ next generation‚ on the farm and even shifting the flow of migration of people back to land. Kiss the Ground as an organization is connecting and uplifting people from all backgrounds. This commitment has led us to produce media and materials that are in at least 10 different languages. Every resource we create is open source, which means it is free and downloadable to the public. We have expanded our programs to offer courses, training, and resources in Spanish. The documentary shows individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, perspectives, and locations in the world. The cast features farmers and ranchers who are the pioneers and renowned trainers in regenerative agriculture, celebrities (including Jason Mraz, Tom Brady, Gisele B√ºndchen, Patricia Arquette and Woody Harrelson), top scientists, elected officials and policy makers, all alongside everyday people. What other topic transcends political, social, and geographical differences like soil? We would argue another is hard to come by, soil is literally our common ground.
