Project Summary / Description:
Methane emissions from the oil and gas industry contribute to approximately 4.5% of man-made climate change. Mitigation of leaks is cheap at a few dollars per t CO2 equivalent and no new technologies are needed to mitigate emissions. Methane is a primarily a measurement challenge. Finding emissions in a timely manner is very expensive because Methane is invisible and odorless, leaks are fluctuating and there are billions of components that could leak (and most of them do not leak). Kuva is a breakthrough technology platform that automates the detection of Methane leaks with low-cost IoT cameras.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Methane emissions from oil and gas facilities are almost always co-located with VOC emissions. Oil an gas sites are very often placed at vulnerable and low-income communities. VOC emissions result in significant adverse health impact for these communities. This is especially the case in developing countries. Reducing Methane emissions based on detections with the Kuva camera will at the same time also significantly reduce VOC emissions. A global adoption of the Kuva solution will therefore significantly improve health for vulnerable communities - above and beyond the benefit of reducing climate change.
