Project Summary / Description:
Ghana‚ wood industry generates sawn wood waste of about 97,000 tonnes annually. If burnt, carbon dioxide is released along with some toxic gases. Its anaerobic decomposition in landfills generates methane. In the savannah and rural parts of Ghana, thatch roofs are weather-friendly form of roof because of the extreme weather conditions. However, due to their poor engineering, they require frequent replacement. The continuous cutting of fresh grasses for their replacement reduces the carbon sink. We decided to produce composites, pellets, briquettes, and engineered thatch roof using plastic waste, wood residue and grass in order to address the climate change challenges highlighted.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Burning the bio-residues contributes to climate change; their disposal means no economic value addition. When they are converted into usable products for construction and energy generation, they reduce cost of construction and create employment for women and youth who will be involved in the residue and grass collection and processing. Retailing of the products from these residues and grasses will be mostly done by women. This also leads to conversion of waste to money, a household activity which is usually undertaken by women and children.
