LanzaTech‚ carbon recycling technology is like retrofitting a brewery onto an emission source like a steel mill, but instead of using sugars and yeast to make beer, pollution is converted by bacteria to fuels and chemicals! Our project uses microbes to convert carbon from a liability to an opportunity, displacing fossil resources for fuel and chemical production. We can use a variety of input streams from industrial off gases (refining, steel, ferro alloy), unsorted unrecyclable MSW to biomass wastes and residues. Our microbes can make fuels, including jet fuel and over 30 different chemicals. The magnitude of our fossil habit today sees us consume 50M barrels/day for transport and emit 40giga tones of CO2/year! Imagine if you could take those emissions and convert them to fuels and chemicals, cleaning our air and keeping fossils in the ground in one carbon smart step! We need an abundant affordable feedstock to displace fossil resources and we need technologies that are able to economically convert waste carbon rich resources to valuable products. LanzaTech can turn our 40gt emissions problem into a feedstock, displacing the 50M barrels/day habit. LanzaTech has 4 operating commercial plants as of October 2023.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
LanzaTech Global, Inc. (NASDAQ: LNZA) is the carbon recycling company transforming waste carbon into sustainable raw materials for everyday products. Using its biorecycling technology, LanzaTech captures carbon generated by energy-intensive industries at the source, preventing it from being emitted into the air. LanzaTech then gives that captured carbon a new life as a clean replacement for virgin fossil carbon in everything from household cleaners and clothing fibers to packaging and fuels. By partnering with companies across the global supply chain like ArcelorMittal, Zara, H&M Move, Coty, and On, LanzaTech is paving the way for a circular carbon economy. Currently facilities using LanzaTech's technology are abating the equivalent of over 300,000 tons/CO2 per annum.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Waste streams from industrial manufacturing, refining, agriculture, and societal waste have the greatest immediate human health impacts locally to their production. Marginalized groups are therefore disproportionately impacted by these wastes as they lack the resources to escape their influence. By providing a path to create value from these waste streams carbon recycling incentivizes the elimination of pollution while creating skilled and unskilled jobs in these regions. Today there are significant detrimental local health and environmental consequences to land filling or incinerating municipal waste or biomass residues. However, by gasifying and converting this waste resource into fuels and chemical products we can both greatly increase local employment opportunities while eliminating the cause of the localized pollution.
