Project Summary / Description:
Liight is an application with the purpose to transform the mobility and recycling habits of its users, by incentivising them to be more sustainable in their daily lives through gamification, smart-city mechanisms and artificial intelligence. The main motivation behind Liight, founded in 2017 by Santiago Jimen z Cortes and Carlos Rosety, was to contribute to the fight against climate change, by solving climate related issues with the innovative use of technology. Air pollution is the most direct issue that Liight seeks to solve given that air pollution is the number one cause of early deaths amongst western population yet private car ownership is on the rise. Despite high rates of awareness of climate change, society and corporations are slow to change their habits. We saw the possibility in gamification to incentivise and therefore accelerate a more sustainable lifestyle. In summary, Liight is a multi-stakeholder solution to climate-related issues, by transforming users habits, promoting sustainable businesses and evidencing reduced environmental impact for public institutions and corporations.

Liight empowers citizens to become a bigger part of a sustainable gaming community, in effect, it is a platform that elevates their voice and patterns of behaviour. Facilitating citizens to change their habits and be the providers of CO2 reduction data, allows citizens a platform to show their readiness level for progressive change to people in a higher position of power. Liight has a fun, light-hearted way of communicating with its users which attracts a younger user audience. Inspired by Greta Thunberg, younger children have demonstrated their frustration with the pace of change to fight against the climate emergency. Liight offers them a tangible tool to measure their positive impact. Consequently, Liight is motivating the future to be more sustainable through rewards and awareness raising. Within the team of Liight, the founders are committed to growing a diverse team, both demographically and cognitively. It is important that the experiences and minds behind Liight are diverse so that the application grows into an application that represents and empowers all citizens. Communicating its context is crucial to Liight‚ success. Hence, through its social media channels, Liight raises awareness about the broader political context of the fight against climate change. This comittment to awareness raising educates users, of all levels of awareness, the social aspects to the sustainability project.
