Project Summary / Description:

L4T looks at the source of litter and looking at ways to mitigate ground up which is just as crucial as looking from the top down. The scale of the problem is so big as plastic there are no collectors and no infrastructure in allot of these communities so the place to dump is everywhere, rivers fields etc.Governments and consumers are viewing plastic pollution as an urgent environmental problem, yet one without a clear solution. 91% of plastic waste ends up in landfill, incinerated or in our oceans and environment. We are the preventative campaign, you can do as many BEACH clean ups as you want but if you don't get to the route of the problem, educating and cleaning up before the litter reaches the environment and waterways we shall be chasing our tails for ever.

Women, people of color, youth, climate vulnerable communities is the exact people that our Project targets and uplifts. Social impact, educating 1000 each month and not giving handouts, empowers and instills prides in the communities that are underrepresented. In South Africa and Mexico due to corruption and lack of jobs our communities can only afford low income produce such as chips, sweets, coca- cola so high in sugar (people dying from cancer , diabetes due to this very toxic diet). There is no nutrition, and the plastic problem is rife as there is little to no value so everything is dumped in the environment as there is also no infrastructure, Our impact quantifiable emissions reduction since 2015 - Litter4tokens South Africa

Mission Statement:

(L4T) was set up by Clare Swithenbank-Bowman in December 2015 to tackle the dual challenge of litter and unemployment in a North Coast community in South Africa. By paying people to collect all recyclable and non-recyclable waste (PET, LDPE, PP, Tin, Cardboard etc.) and not giving handout in exchange for tokens with a monetary value to exchange for dry goods. L4T is simultaneously preventing thousands of tons of waste reaching the oceans and landfill as well as decreasing C02 levels, cleaning up communities, empowering and providing an income to people living in poverty. L4T is a registered NPC and Trash4tokens 501 c 3. We are in South Africa, Mexico and Untied States. With funding we want to launch in other countries such as India, Bali who also have similar waste issues, corruption and poverty. Educating, empowering and preventing more devastation.
