Project Summary / Description:

The project came about due to the Tribes' possible genocide if the Louisiana Delta area is allowed to lose more land. It is the fastest disappearing delta in the world and is a critical part of cleaning the wastewater from 36 states and providing for estuaries that contribute to the fish populations both in the Gulf and the Atlantic plus a major flyway for bird/butterfly migration between North and South America. The Tribes are determined to use traditional methods of restoration to save the diminishing land, methods not embraced by the State of Louisiana's coastal restoration plan.

The Tribes face genocide without their land. The project is to help stabilize valuable estuaries that have been providing subsistence for the tribes for time immemorial. This is an alternative economy, one framed on justice and inclusive of all parts of the extended family relationships that is the Tribe and the Tribal Nations of Grand Bayou, Atakapa-Ishtak, Pointe au Chien and Grand Caillou. The work is intergenerational so as to pass ancient knowledge and wisdom of the ecology of place and to share viable problem solving ideas for restoration of place that has been ravaged (98% of the destruction) by oil companies.
