Project Summary / Description:
Makeena was founded in December of 2012 with the purpose to provide shoppers with meaningful content and incentives, brands and retailers receive critical business insights and shopper profile data that can be used to strengthen their business. The app is intended to motivate users to lead healthy lifestyles and focus on increasing sustainability across the globe, beginning with the food we eat. Makeena is committed to promoting mindfulness and being a change-maker and revolutionizing the standards we have for everyday products. Karen Frame, the founder and CEO of Makeena, has a longstanding passion for nutrition, global outreach and protecting disadvantaged groups, such as those suffering from chronic illnesses. Fueled by her passion for science instilled by her father, a professor at the University of Illinois, Karen began coding by the mere age of 4 years old and even wrote a book on wanting to feed the starving children of the world by 2nd grade. This passion only grew during college when Karen met her former husband, an organic farmer. From this point forward, Karen knew that her purpose was to provide access to nutritious and organic goods to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Makeena serves underrepresented, low-income individuals who do not have access to healthy and organic foods or products on their own dime. Makeena serves as a price equalizer between healthy and unhealthy products to make organic and quality foods and products more accessible to those who cannot otherwise afford it. It is no secret that healthy and organic products, which are typically better for you and for the planet, are expensive and people typically pay a higher price point for the brand and sustainable packaging. Makeena combats this issue by allowing low-income groups to afford these items through cash-back rewards and incentives through the app. Additionally, Makeena is in the process of forming a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization to create community kitchens that provide boxes of organic foods and products to those who cannot afford it. Makeena is looking to make sustainable and organic products more accessible to those who have been historically ostracized from a healthy lifestyle due to an affordability factor.
