Project Summary / Description:
MMRF was founded to examine the intersection between agriculture and ecology. We are creating land use models that replicate ecosystem services and provide yields.

In 2004, I left my job as director Toledo cacao Growers Association, where I managed the internal control mechanisms for organic and Fairtrade certification. I observed that the classroom pedagogy with vertical transfer of knowledge was ineffective. Farmers tends to have high botanical and systems literacy, making lateral movements of information via farmer to farmer trainings to be much more effective. MMRF was established, with a board of directors, to be a living classroom for farmers.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
MMRF works with women in various capacities. We have been involved with women‚ groups with photovoltaic water pumping, building composting latrines in rural communities, and we mandate that %50 of our scholarships go to women. We also ensure that our teaching teams are %50 female. This year two of our former students who are female will be brought in as teachers in training for a two week course on permaculture, agroforestry and carbon drawdown. In 2005 we trained 20 women in vanilla cultivation as this is a high value crop that can be grown close to the house. This enables women to have access to income derived from the home.
