Project Summary / Description:
This open streets movement comes at a period in which Addis Ababa is rapidly urbanizing, with adverse consequences to human health and safety, rising traffic fatalities, environmental contamination, air pollution and emissions levels. Menged Le Sew was formed to mitigate these urban challenges, striving to promote ecological protection, sustainable mobility, healthy active living and social cohesion, while reducing pollution levels, cultivating environmental awareness, encouraging alternatives modes of transportation, improving road safety and building inclusive communities. The organizing committee was formed through a convergence of several now co-founders at the Open Streets Exchange for African Cities in October 2018.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Addis Ababa is increasingly becoming an economically divided city, with the advent of gated communities and a growing gap between the rich and the poor. To counter these divisive urban dynamics, Menged Le Sew is creating socially inclusive public spaces that are open to all, regardless of background. This allows for communities from differing socio-economic backgrounds to participate freely in Menged Le Sew, creating space for social cohesion. In addition, across African cities, women represent the primary demographic users of NMT. The impacts of Menged Le Sew in terms of NMT infrastructure development (e.g. a recent three kilometre cycling corridor is being constructed in Menged Le Sew‚ most popular location) represent infrastructure investment that is directly benefitting women. We also invite community organizations that are aligned with our vision. An example is Noble Cup, an Ethiopian organization reducing stigma around menstruation and providing eco-friendly options for women‚ health.
