Project Summary / Description:
Mi Terro is the world's first synthetic biology and advanced material company that utilizes big data to create home compostable, single-use plastic-alternative packaging materials made from plant-based agricultural waste ‚ this is a first-of-its-kind approach. The company‚ story is that Robert visited his uncle‚ dairy farm in China and saw buckets and buckets of spoiled milk on his farm, which led Robert to investigate excess food in agriculture and then in all industries. He realized it‚ a huge problem that we just don‚ t talk about enough.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
We engineer low-value biomass waste into high-value hydrophilic and hydrophobic biopolymers to end microplastic and hunger at price parity as conventional plastic yet up to 80% lesser CO2 emissions. Mi Terro uses a selection of biopolymers and natural fibers with the aim to maximize the use of side streams, second generation (non-food feedstock) and certified biomasses.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Mi Terro uses a selection of biopolymers and natural fibers with the aim to maximize the use of side streams, second generation (non-food feedstock) and certified biomasses. For example, the beer waste we use originates from industrial side streams from sustainably managed brewery and constitutes a large share of the total composition of many of our materials. We pay attention to that the biomasses the biopolymers originate from are sustainably grown according to good land use principles. We are not turning agricultural waste into beverage or snack like other companies. Instead, we are re-engineering plant-based agricultural waste to replace single-use plastic, glass, and paper materials and giving additional incomes to farmers all around the world.
