Project Summary / Description:
The Grow Solar Partnership began in 2012 with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative. The goal was to lower soft costs for solar photovoltaics (PV), which we did by educating Midwesterners about PV, and lowering costs for residential and small commercial PV through Solar Group Buy Programs. We recognized that property owners were looking at solar to protect against rising utility prices, reduce carbon emissions, and achieve energy freedom. We help community members learn the basics of solar, financial implications of solar, and help lower their own costs to go solar by pooling their purchasing power.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Starting in 2018 and going forward, our competitive installer selection process awards points for firms that Prioritize diversity and inclusiveness in business practices, including but not limited to diversity goals in hiring and/or contracting processes; collection of data on hiring and promotion processes with regards to diversity on the basis of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, criminal record; and/or specific initiatives to increase diversity and inclusiveness in the workplace. And, because the more people who go solar, the lower the price for everyone, Solar Group Buys inspire many people to go solar who otherwise wouldn‚ t. According to our post install surveys: 59% of respondents said they were unlikely or very unlikely to have installed solar without the group buy. Only 25% said they were likely or very likely to have gone solar without it. This statistic illustrates the level of access we provide to those interested in our programs. It also shows how what we do helps show both the group participating and neighboring communities what is now realistic for solar energy installation, shattering the far-off, futuristic technology stereotype.

Mission Statement:
For over 30 years, the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) has led the Midwest in fostering renewable energy education through our many educational initiatives. In particular, we have initiatives focused on the development of robust markets for renewables and a history of success in public engagement and inspiring positive energy and climate action. Supported by 2,300 members across the Midwest, the MREA promotes renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable living through education and demonstration. We believe education is the key to creating a clean energy future. Our Solar Group Buy Programs are opening minds to renewable energy one community at a time.
