Project Summary / Description:
Mosaic Materials is an Alameda, California, based startup dedicated to reducing the cost and environmental impact of fossil fuels through the application of proprietary, highly efficient gas separation technologies. Mosaic Materials is developing advanced porous solids, commonly known as metal-organic frameworks or MOFs, to remove impurities such as CO2 from gas mixtures for applications ranging from direct air capture to renewable natural gas to carbon capture. Our technology is based on a new class of amine-functionalized MOFs developed at UC Berkeley. Mosaic Materials was founded in 2014 by Prof. Jeffrey Long, Dr. Thomas McDonald, and Dr. Steven Kaye.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Climate change will affect everyone, regardless of country or continent. People who are living closer to the poverty line will be more adversely affected as the effects of climate change accelerate. The most vulnerable are the 2.5 billion people making their living by managing small farms, fisheries, and animal herds. Three out of four people living in poverty are dependent on these agriculture and natural resources for survival, according to Mercy Corps. These resources will diminish and my vanish as climate change worsens. Mosaic Materials is actively working to deploy materials and systems which remove CO2 from the atmosphere, slowing the effects of climate change, and at scale, working to reverse these negative effects. This prize is another step to helping reverse climate change, stabilizing the natural resource base needed for viable farming, and helping provide a platform for the economically disadvantaged to establish a path to subsistence. Mosaic Materials is an equal opportunity employer.
