Project Summary / Description:

India has about 60.5% of the geographical land area used for agriculture employing over 50% of total workforce and contributing to about 14% of total GDP. Thus it plays key role in socio-economic development of our country however agriculture is also one of the most affected sectors due to climatic changes. 75% of total agricultural land is still dependent on rainfall, more over increased temperatures, long drought spells during kharif season (July ‚ÄìOctober) and unseasonal heavy rains during the rabi season (October- March) is causing serious distress to the farming communities in different states in recent years (CGIAR, n.d), leading to over 12000 suicides every year since 2013 (Mahapatra, 2017) along with other reasons like unable to pay loans taken for crops / fertilizers / pesticides (Wikipedia , 2018). And thus there is a case for moving to climate smart agriculture methods which are less nature dependent and less resource intensive. To circumvent climate vagaries a mix of agro-forestry which would work as shield against storms / temperature increase ,and act as water sponge thus increasing water table alongwith natural farming techniques which works on minimum tillage, no weeding, no external inputs to crops / vegetables has shown great results. However it is not understood by the farming community. I would like to build such a demonstration project in our farm land in village 15 km from my city ‚ Rajkot where farmers most often use mechanized chemical farming driven by market dynamics can visit, learn new method and benefit from.

To improve the way social programs which cater to arousing environment consciousness from being a charity driven, philanthropic activity to well conceptualised, information led, creative and action driven bottom up initiative by empowering organisation / people by upping their environment behaviour and reduced carbon footprint actions.

To devise Action oriented programs which are impact driven led by metrics to measure its impacts leading to appropriate climate action.
