Project Summary / Description:

Mustarinda strives for a post-fossil culture in the long term. The energy and logistics solutions, as well as the garden at the Mustarinda house in Hyrynsalmi provide the prerequisites for work based on renewable energy sources and minimal emissions. The exhibitions, events, projects and residence programme at Mustarinda support these goals.

The project we're now starting aims to build up, develop and adopt new technologies, to minimize greenhouse gas emissions during the activity of running an artist residency, and to explore the challenges related to renewable energy sources within the activities of running a cultural organizations. The project also challenges Finnish and international art institutions to prepare for the post-fossil future.

In the first year of the 2018-2020 project Mustarinda will concentrate on social structures and sharing the knowledge we've gained since 2010 when our association was first established. The project will be carried out in collaboration with HIAP (Helsinki International Artist Program).

Mission Statement:

At the centre of Mustarinda's activity lies contemporary art, interdisciplinary research, practical experimentation, communication, teaching and events. The Mustarinda Association strives towards a post-fossil culture by combining scientific knowledge and experiential artistic activity.

The Mustarinda Association is active both internationally and locally. Our activities are rooted at the Mustarinda house at the edge of the Paljakka nature reserve in the Kainuu region of Finland; the house has versatile spaces for artist and researcher residencies, and is also the location for exhibitions and various public engagement events. Some of our activity also takes place in Helsinki. We also have been making an annual publication.
