Project Summary / Description:
Our farming and ranching communities are the front line for climate change. Agriculture and land use practices are the second largest contributors to GHG emissions; they also suffer significantly from climate change through increased extreme weather events. While the economic and environmental benefits of regenerative soil practices are evident to producers, scientists, and corporations, we see little investment and a dearth of projects employing these practices. A market failure exists between farmer and rancher needs and companies investing in sustainable commodities. NativeEnergy can bridge this investment gap to create long-term regenerative soil projects for this unmet demand. We seek funding to design and launch a Help Build Soil Development Fund to accelerate soil carbon projects that will sequester millions of tonnes of GHG, improve soil health, and provide long-term climate resiliency to our agriculture and livestock sectors. The Fund would support education and outreach; provide critical soil sampling; assist refinement of soil carbon sequestration methodologies; and assist project development activities. We have opportunities in Montana, the Palouse, and the Midwest. NativeEnergy would adapt its Help Build financing platform to build a soil carbon project portfolio. Help Build overcomes project implementation hurdles by providing the project implementer (in this case farmers and ranchers) with an upfront payment for their future regenerative ag activities. From this investment we create an asset derived from the impact that these projects create over time, similar to a green bond with verified impact as its coupon, and then secure commitments for this asset from our corporate clients.
