Project Summary / Description:
Nazava Water Filters was founded in 2009 in Indonesia with the mission of providing safe drinking water to everyone, everywhere. In many developing countries, water is not safe for direct consumption. Bottled water is too expensive or unavailable for many poor rural and peri-urban households. Thus, many low income households boil as a means to purify their water. While effective at eliminating bacteria, boiling emits greenhouse gasses, especially when using firewood, which is still a common practice especially in rural areas. Nazava uses WHO-certified ceramic water filtration technology that empowers households to purify rain, well, or tap water without boiling or using electricity. Thus by eliminating the need to boil, each filter reduces 0.29 metric tons CO2e per year as verified by the Gold Standard. Through our carbon credit verification process, we are also certified to directly impact SDGs 1,3,5,6,8,13,15.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
In developing countries, women often carry the burden of providing drinking water for the household. Globally women spend 200 million hours each day collecting water and additional time purifying water often by boiling. In rural areas, this often involves searching for firewood, a chore in itself. With climate change affecting not only the quantity and quality of water but also the availability of firewood, the time spent providing water will only get longer. A study conducted by UC Santa Clara found that rural households in Java, Indonesia spend on average 4 hours per week providing drinking water for their families. In Kenya, where the use of firewood for boiling is more common, the time spent providing water is likely even greater. Women who use Nazava save 139 hours per year since they no longer need to boil. Furthermore, when a family member falls ill from drinking dirty water, or breathing smokey air caused by indoor air pollution, it is women who must take care of them. Thus, by providing safe drinking water without the need to boil or use electricity, Nazava Water Filters empower women with better health, cost and time savings. Nazava also provides women with meaningful employment. In addition to having a female founder, 60 percent of our overall staff are women and more than half of management staff are held by women. With our expansion in Kenya we plan to hire 30 additional women in management positions and provide commissioned based pay to 178 women sales agents.

Mission Statement:
We are a social enterprise headquartered in Indonesia producing WHO-certified ceramic water filters that purify rain, well, tap, or river water without the need to boil or use electricity. Since 2009 we have impacted over 650,000 people with safe, affordable drinking water. As Nazava eliminates the need to boil on fossil fuels, we reduce carbon emissions. We have an active Gold Standard certified carbon credit program in Indonesia that has reduced over 232,000 tons CO2-equivalent (CO2e) to date. In 2021 we began our subsidiary company in Kenya. We plan to begin developing carbon credits in Kenya during the first half of 2023. Each filter in Kenya is estimated to reduce 1.25 CO2 tons per year. Carbon credit revenues are used to ‚"‚"expand sales in remote areas, where carbon emissions are the highest due to the high prevalence of using fuelwood and to provide drinking water to schools.
