Project Summary / Description:

Neuterra was founded by Fatimah Walee, a lifelong environmental and social advocate and Black and Muslim woman who was distraught by the impacts consumption was having on Black, Brown and Indigenous communities. She founded Neuterra in late 2020 after the global COVID-19 pandemic wreaked disproportionate havoc and trauma on the Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities of the US and globe and after the brutal murder of George Floyd. 
The purpose of Neuterra is to center the voices and lived experiences of the predominately non-white folks along supply chains who are considered dispensable by large corporations and consumers for cheap, disposable products with linear life cycles (i.e., produce and dispose). This system inherently leads to huge environmental impacts including greenhouse gas emissions, air and water pollution, and land degradation. Neuterra provides a platform for brands that value ethics and sustainable practices along their supply chains to tell their stories and sell their product to similarly minded consumers. The goal is for Neuterra to be a one-stop-shop, online marketplace for the public to easily find products that are made by companies that align with their values and interests. Every brand that is on Neuterra‚ marketplace is stringently vetted to meet strict ethical and environmental standards. This is something that cannot be said for other large online marketplaces that value profits over people and the planet. Neuterra will also serve as an educational platform, highlighting the impacts of supply chains and manufacturing on the planet and people.

We decode supply chains’ societal and environmental impacts and share those findings with consumers. We enable consumers to make data-driven buying decisions and deliver brands consumer insights on transparency trends, making due diligence and ethical sourcing the norm.

Neuterra not only values diversity and uplifting historically silenced voices, Neuterra is diverse. Neuterra is owned and led by a Black, Muslim woman, someone who has historically been underestimated as a founder and whose local community and networks have been disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis. Other members of our founding team are first-generation college graduates and immigrants with countless lived experiences that are critical for the climate movement. As a business practice, Neuterra partners with brands owned by historically excluded populations and provides a platform for them to succeed. Neuterra also will contribute profits each quarter to selected non-profit organizations who are on the front lines leading climate and social movements in various communities.
