Primary Project Category:
Project Summary / Description:
The project proposes a tangible approach to the climate crisis, allowing communities to understand its dynamics and take action into addressing it by taking a protagonist role, which is important considering that 7 of the estimated 10 most affected countries by climate change are located in the African continent and that some of the fastest-growing cities in the world are located in Africa and projected to double their populations by 2035. This project builds, proves, and shares evidence that solving the waste issue is a solution to the climate crisis. There are three strategies worth mentioning that connect this project to the climate crisis: organic waste management, plastic waste management, and transportation of solid waste. The project also addresses pressing issues on social and environmental justice and generates dignifying employment for vulnerable groups.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses), Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)
Best Estimate of GHG Avoidance/Reduction of This Project (Tonnes CO2 Equivalent/Year):
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Waste management reflects social inequalities in the African region, where most low-income communities lack waste management services and struggle with polluted grounds that heavily impact the health of their livelihoods. Vulnerable groups, like women, youth, informal waste collectors, and indigenous populations must be included in waste management solutions and regain their relevant social status through that role. In the zero waste model, these groups become active community members that educate and service their communities and play a leadership role. The first waste cooperative in Tanzania was registered through this project and all cooperative members, who formally did not have a birth certificate or any formal identification, currently have formal documents and a bank account in their names.

Mission Statement:
Nipe Fagio exists to drive systemic change in Tanzania. Systemic problems require systemic solutions that are socially inclusive, address historical social injustice, and are environmentally built. Nipe Fagio works over three pillars: Knowledge: We have the largest database on waste in Tanzania and we adopt recognized methodologies to collect reliable data that can support decision-making in the waste management sector. Policy: We advocate for national, regional, and global policies that target the end of plastic pollution and create accountability systems for plastic producers. We bring the voice of the Global South to policy forums, representing the African region. Action: We are the implementers of the first Zero Waste model in East Africa, a cooperative-led system that enables 80-90% waste recovery rates, reduces GHG emissions by up to 78%, and generates employment for vulnerable populations that through their leadership role in community engagements to regain their social status.
