Project Summary / Description:
By working to inculcate the most basic notions of respect for the environment in the people around them, the young mens and womens are acting to improve their future and to have the urgency of reacting to the current environmental situation recognized. However, some of the actions drawn up or proposed by these young people are less receptive by politicians or decision-makers who, for lack of manifest will, consider the proposals made to be less serious. In addition, illiteracy, the low rate of environmental education of young people, the difficulties of speaking out and explaining existing scientific data by young people are obstacles to their involvement in advocacy on environmental issues during international negotiations and the implementation of national commitments. A survey carried out by ACTED NGO in 2020 reveals gaps and misunderstandings among young people on certain specific aspects, a less in-depth knowledge of the causes of climate change, the consequences on agriculture, human settlements, or biodiversity as well as weaknesses in the adaptation and mitigation measures proposed by the latter. It is in this context that this project aims in particular to provide a response to the various shortcomings observed among young people by supporting their training in various programs related to environmental sciences and by strengthening their capacity in leadership at both the academic and professional levels through a mentoring program.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Young activists in associative movements from West African countries are the direct beneficiaries of the project. They play a central role in addressing today's environmental challenges, fighting not only for themselves but also for future generations. These include men and women, pupils, students and professionals who are not specialists in the environment but who over time have expressed a desire to pursue academic and professional training in the management of natural resources or in the environmental sector in order to make themselves heard better. The indirect beneficiaries are the members of the civil society organisations towhich the future winners belong. These organisations will benefit from competent human capital that will contribute to the various community resilience projects in the future. Another indirect beneficiary is the Ministry of the Environment of the different countries in which the selected young people come with whom the results of this project will be shared through a capitalization workshop and advocacy actions for improvement and sustainability.
