Project Summary / Description:
The California biochar model was created to address multiple statewide challenges including commitments to reduce total emissions, manage forest biomass for health and fire safety, build long-term soil health, and improve drought resilience. Pacific Biochar has built a successful business over the past decade proving that biochar production can be rapidly implemented at the appropriate scale and cost to address these challenges. Our strategic plan involves renovating an additional series of existing bioenergy facilities in high fire hazard forest areas. Building on our well established reputation and long-term relationships in key industries, we are uniquely positioned to lead the scale-up effort to meet and exceed these goals.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
We modify biomass power plants for biochar production, deploy these biochar materials in farmlands, and optimize such processes for carbon removal and other ecosystem benefits.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The California biochar model involves working with bioenergy plants that provide heat, electricity, and employment to rural and low income communities throughout California. Many of these facilities are located in areas at major risk for catastrophic wildfire in desperate need of biomass management strategies to reduce fuel loads in the forests surrounding vulnerable communities. While some of these facilities are falling into disrepair, jobs are disappearing, and what was once a staple industry in these communities has forced many individuals to migrate to cities for lack of work. A similar story is evolving in rural farming communities facing degraded soils, waste management challenges, and health problems related to agricultural runoff. Pacific Biochar is actively engaged in modifying aging bioenergy facilities for biochar production while they continue providing employment and renewable sources of biomass heat/power to areas that often lack access to these vital services. Biochar provides an additional revenue stream for the bioenergy facility while improving farmer livelihoods and environmental health.
