Project Summary / Description:
Pecos Wind Power is developing a low cost 85kW distributed wind turbine to give commercial electricity customers a renewable and cost-competitive alternative to their utility-provided electricity. Our turbine, the PW85, is designed to be installed behind-the-meter next to schools, small businesses, and farms. While solar is an excellent renewable option for some of these customers, it is not feasible for many who have poor solar resource, insufficient ground space, or unsuitable roofs. The need these customers have for a low-cost renewable energy option motivated the development of the PW85 turbine. The PW85 has the lowest cost of energy in the distributed wind industry at 6.3 cents/kWh. It is the only distributed wind turbine designed for low wind speed markets (IEC61400 Class IV, average wind speeds of 6m/s and below) enabling it to tap into wind resources previously unsuitable for wind power development. Our team is leveraging our experience in the design of utility-scale wind turbines to apply the same design techniques to our PW85 distributed wind turbine that have enabled a 50% reduction in the cost of utility-scale turbines over the past 10 years. By increasing rotor swept area to improve AEP, reducing load levels to efficiently minimize material usage, and minimizing balance of station costs through our innovative tilt-up installation process, we expect the PW85 to have a levelized cost of energy 38% less than the best-selling distributed wind turbine currently on the market, Northern Power‚ NPS100c-24 (currently 10.2 cents/kWh). We have recently completed the preliminary design of the PW85 and are raising funds to test our tilt-up tower system and install our full-scale prototype turbine.

Mission Statement:
Pecos Wind Power aims to break down the barriers that are preventing greater adoption of distributed wind power. A key element of this is to lead the industry in terms of turbine cost and performance so that our wind turbine can benefit our customer‚ bottom line as much as it does the environment. Additionally, we strive to eliminate the Not-In-My-Back-Yard perception of distributed wind turbines: Our turbine design minimizes noise emissions, our siting policy avoids bird migratory paths, and our business model encourages community involvement in the turbine financing. We believe there is an urgent need to transition to renewable energy and that Pecos Wind Power has a solution that will allow our distributed wind turbine to make an immediate impact.
