Project Summary / Description:
This 2–4-month mentor-driven workshop program activates action-oriented mothers, teachers, and children called PERI BUMI to solve Indonesia’s alarming climate because of behavioral issues. Focusing on communities, education, and connection, the program builds the up-to-date skills needed for environmental savings. It prepares mothers, teachers, and children for a mindful, lifelong engagement with solving climate problems through behavioral problems. Strengthened by a connection-based approach and action-oriented communities, the program provides in-depth knowledge, toolkits, and mentoring from local and international experts to think about local data (communities), engage in local campaigns, and build innovative solutions. We bring together local and international practitioners, experts, policymakers, and funders to build a stronger community around children through education for mothers and teachers. Focused on local neighborhoods, this experiential problem-solving ideology is an easily adaptable template for the global world. Throughout this past year, our movement has increased. We dared to increase the number of participants from 55 ambassadors and 11 facilitators to 250 and 50 facilitators in the workshops for mothers. This year, there were 865 applicants for the classes for mothers, and those not selected were included in a community that had already been formed in 2022. As a result, our community of mothers now consists of more than 1,500 mothers. In 2023, we’ve also organized workshops for teachers and elementary school-aged children to encourage schools to contribute by incorporating ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) into the curriculum and lesson plans. This year, each participant will create their own project to solve a problem in their environment. We have collaborated with more partners than in 2022 and have obtained additional grants to carry out educational programs. Additionally, through that collaboration, we have organized events and made accurate contributions. One such example is our collaboration with waste management called PERI PONG. We collect toy waste that accumulates in households and then screw it using a particular machine to produce raw materials for making playground toys in parks. Furthermore, with our partner, we are establishing a community garden in Jakarta.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Focus on education and behavior change. We have found that the main technical issue in Indonesia today is the problem of production and consumption at the household level, which includes meeting daily needs that ultimately generate waste and consume energy. This issue can be more easily addressed if individuals change their behavior and interconnected communities network within a larger community, equipped with knowledge, skills, and understanding of environmentally friendly behavior. This way, all members of society understand the importance of implementing conscious and sustainable behavior in their daily lives. The key to reaching that point is education. There will only be behavior change, mitigation, or adaptation with education for behavior change. That’s why We created 10R as a reference for behavior change that we hope beneficiaries will do before they spread it again to community members or other people in their immediate area. 10 R: Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Refurbish, Remanufacture, Repurpose, Recycle, Ramble Connection makes us interconnected. Various issues in Indonesia are interconnected, including unequal education, climate change, employment, energy and emissions, waste management, water consumption, children's rights, domestic violence, crime, etc. Therefore, integration must be the way we think when seeking solutions. We believe that solutions to solve various issues arise from changes in habits and access to education. This is why PERI BUMI exists and starts everything by restoring nurturing patterns and education according to basic human needs: connection. We strongly believe that any effective change starts with habits and rituals instilled with love by those closest to children in their smallest circles of life. We have chosen this path and then collaborated with others who have also taken steps (from different fields) to work together more closely and in sync and achieve our shared aspirations faster, which have always been the goals of all the good practices we have done so far. Human connection can be achieved by leveraging technology-based connections. The digital-based classes we conduct can reach a wider audience. It can even serve to connect changemakers not only on a national scale but also internationally. Seeing the effectiveness and impact of PERI BUMI, we feel that what we have done so far has the potential to create a massive and tangible impact, deserving to be continued and expanded on a larger scale.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The expected end impacts are as follows: • Reduction of household waste, both organic and inorganic. • Reduction of household energy consumption. • Individual and collective behaviors characterized by consciousness. • Individual and collective behaviors that are sustainable. • Socially and economically interconnected community systems. From these five points, the potential implementation of tangible impacts can also include: • Implementation of climate change curriculum in schools. • Strengthened networking among groups, regions, and professions to realize a connected community ecosystem and return to the core communal values of Indonesia. • Increased awareness among the entire population and expanded networks benefiting from projects, programs, and collaborative activities. • Accelerated projection of the success of sustainable development goals. We indeed reflect the local interest because each one of the beneficiaries will develop projects based on their assessment of significant problems in their closest area/field. They will do this project with their communities, such as family, friends, neighbors, working partners, and the society around them. We believe in multiple solutions for every problem. That's why we integrated many issues to cultivate connection through education and break the cycle (turn the lousy behavior into mindful pro-environmental consumption and production behavior) so we could safeguard children's future from the climate crisis and develop a connected society. Our workshop themes are based on family values, so the classes not only teach beneficiaries about the climate crisis but also start with how to be a mindful person, how to raise and teach mindful children, how to empower ourselves and other people, and how to upcycle, composting, effective the kitchen management, grow our foods, effective waste management, and reduce household energy as well. So we collaborate with environmental-based stakeholders, education, parenting, and social protection (care industry and reduce poverty). The impact on Indonesia will undoubtedly be even more significant than just being a solution to the current problems. Education for children from an early age can be carried out effectively; disconnected family roles can be repaired, so the future of children, the whole society, and even the earth can improve.
