Project Summary / Description:
Over 60% of EU forest biomass is at risk due to climate change. In Germany more than 500.000 hectares (> 5%) of the forest died since 2018 because of ongoing droughts making trees very susceptible to bark beetle attacks. Monocultures need to be adapted to biodiverse forests to reduce their climate risk. This process of making forests more resilient against changing climatic conditions is called forest adaptation. The problem is these projects are very expensive. To address this, Pina Earth was founded in 2021 after a structured ideation process and 150+ interviews with forest owners and carbon credit buyers. At Pina Earth, we enable European landowners to access voluntary carbon markets by quantifying and rewarding sustainable forestry. Our focus is on optimizing existing forests through improved management to create climate-resistant mixed forests. This approach has a potential of around 0.5 Gt of additional CO2e avoidance and removal in the EU.

- Pina Earth is led by a female CEO, who is serving as a role model for women in a male-dominated startup ecosystem (only 20% of startup founders are women [1]). It is part of our company's core values to actively support and empower talents with diverse backgrounds from underrepresented groups. - Enable all forest owners to access the voluntary carbon market and be rewarded for active climate and biodiversity protection - even those who own only a small parcel of forest. - By raising awareness of the topic of forest degradation we also want to educate younger generations on the importance of our natural resources and empower them to build a more sustainable future. Mission Statement:
When we started in January 2021, we quickly learned that the situation of German forest owners is quite desperate. Climate change poses an imminent threat to local forests. Major investments are needed to prevent large losses of forest area. However, forest owners lack the financial resources to do so. Here is where Pina Earth comes in. We enable forest owners to secure funding, by starting high-quality carbon projects. Our one-stop solution guarantees minimal effort by offering data collection, monitoring, and project certification and allows forest owners to offer carbon credits on our online platform. By decreasing the costs and time needed for project development, entry barriers are lowered and the carbon credit market is opened up for smaller EU forest owners. Pina Earth is based and active in Germany, planning to expand to other European countries (France, Spain, and Italy) as the next step.
