Primary Project Category:
Project Summary / Description:
Millions of tons of waste byproduct material is sent to landfills every day. These byproducts have many useful materials that can be recycled and reused. In Dec 2020 the paper manufacturer approached us to explore the possibility of diverting these wastes from landfills. These products also contain other unwanted materials and may also contain some harsh chemicals. The goal of this project is to convert this waste material into useful biomaterials. We will analyze the chemical composition of the byproduct and design the experiments to separate the valuable paper fibers. The paper fiber will then be blended into a resin matrix to make the biomaterials. These biomaterials will be tested for their properties and applications.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Pivot is based in HUBZone and works with areas of economic under privileged. We have a working relation with the Kettering University in Flint Michigan. Climate change has affected the rural areas and vulnerable communities most. So we are focused on creating the jobs in these areas. We have interns for Wayne State and Kettering University and develop them for the real time jobs.
