Project Summary / Description:
Peru is the 2nd country in area of Amazon rainforest and a megadiver country, however, it is the 5th most deforested country. In the north, the regions of San Martin and Amazonas are particularly affected, due to agriculture, especially coffee culture. For 20 years ECOAN is a recognized local player supporting local communities in implementing shade coffee. It has notably carried out a reforestation and shade coffee project in Pomacochas with the support of international foundations. As a result, end of 2021 Cuispes‚ community approached ECOAN to ask for support in setting up a shade coffee culture, and the project began with the support of Plan√®te Urgence (PU). The CUISCAF project (Cafe sostenible en Cuispes) aims at bringing a solution to the deforestation caused by agriculture in the region of Amazonas in Peru thanks to the development of coffee in agroforestry as a sustainable alternative for ecosystems and local communities.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)
Best Estimate of GHG Avoidance/Reduction of This Project (Tonnes CO2 Equivalent/Year):
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The project is based on supporting farmers in the Cuispes community to implement quality shade coffee that takes into account sustainable agricultural practices. It thus offers farmers an alternative to extensive agriculture and livestock farming while helping them to improve their economic income. 40 farming families have been involved in the project during the first year. The project will continue to support the women beneficiaries of the project and in particular rural women. It will ensure equal treatment for every member of the community outside of gender issues. As the community members are predominantly men in the local culture, the project will support women's entry into the project and ensure an inclusive professional environment. In addition, in previous ECOAN projects, the construction of the nursery has always been done near a school to serve as a tool for indirect awareness of the school public on the preservation of ecosystems. Awareness-raising activities for children and young people will be included in the project with the aim of valuing the role of young people in environmental conservation, through trainings, conferences and guided tours of the project. Furthermore, the project aims at reinforcing the capacities, resilience and autonomy of the local community of CUISPES, including enhancing their local and traditional knowledge and traditions.
