Project Summary / Description:
Plenum Architecture's "Pocket Palace Project" seeks to decarbonize energy and move towards zero-emissions through testing & certification of "The Oaklander". The Oaklander , conceived in 2022, is PlenumArc's smallest whole-building housing solution, designed for California's Bay Area & was designed with the area‚ housing crisis in mind. Research and design have already occurred, with longevity, health, community, and cultural relevance centered. PlenumArc is currently in discussions with strategic partner Monte Wilson, who has identified a suitable site in Richmond, California that could receive the first Oaklander . Data collected from the construction of the first Oaklander would inform all other projects at PlenumArc, allowing us to move towards an attainable, and just, decarbonized world.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses), Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The Bay Area is fortunate in that young people of color and women are already at the forefront of the climate movement. PlenumArc founders are a woman and a person of color, who are committed to working with local, grassroots organizations such as Youth vs. Apocalypse to get their input on how our project can address the disproportionate affects of climate change and environmental health hazards in underserved communities. These relationships provide opportunities to increase awareness and education amongst one-another around how our communities can and should thrive.

Mission Statement:
Plenum Architecture is an employee-owned and operated public benefit corporation that believes Bay Area residents deserve to have their imaginations sparked and their dreams realized. We collaborate with community and ethics-oriented owners, developers, civic agencies, companies, and other AEC firms to build ADUs, affordable housing and community-centric spaces in traditionally underserved communities. Design starts with us. Built to reflect Oakland, we are members of the communities we serve, always working to further include under-represented people in our organization through our hiring, training, and contracting practices. PlenumArc is committed to creating new models that serve our diverse communities better and data collected from the Pocket Palace Project relative to GHG emissions will help inform future projects and developments throughout the Bay Area region. We hope to utilize the finished building, via a rent-back agreement, as a living case-study that may be visited by the public.
