It began as a world-first idea with no financial backing. While visiting India a group of six recent Engineering and Environmental Science graduates from Australia saw immense need and decided to find a solution.

Energy poverty affects an estimated 400 million people in India. Affected families live without access to electricity, and most rely on kerosene and wood for light and cooking. Burning kerosene is expensive, contributes to respiratory illness, and has serious environmental implications; between 7 ‚ 9% of kerosene used by common wick lamps converted to pure black carbon. Pollinate Energy is a replicable micro-distribution sales network, developed to provide India‚ urban slum communities with access to sustainable technologies. Pollinators, our local sales people, go door-to-door in slum communities selling these products. Our model aims to address the main barriers to people improving their lives: product access, knowledge, finance and service.

To date, Pollinate has focussed on impacting families within large ‚ tier 1‚ cities. However, we are actively looking to expand our operations within smaller neighbouring cities to increase our impact. Furthermore, we actively consult with communities to ensure we provide products based on genuine need.

2018 sees us forming strong partnerships with organisations like Empower Generation, a social enterprise that empowers women to set up businesses selling solar energy products in rural Nepali communities. Together, we aim to promote thriving economies which ensure that the most marginalised communities have access to the products they need, on affordable terms, via a locally empowered sales network.

An estimated 400 million people in India live in abject poverty. Many of these people live without access to electricity and other essentials. 

Our vision is to improve the lives of India‚ urban poor by giving them access to sustainable products that make their lives better; to empower local entrepreneurs to be a positive force for change in these communities; and to enable a paradigm-shift to make social business mainstream by raising awareness about the communities we work with and inspiring the next generation of social entrepreneurs.
