Our project, formed to bring awareness to children and young adults on the effects that food have on our environment, health and animals. We aim to provide a solution designed to bring a default plant-based food options into schools by influencing institutions, municipalities, training caterers and teaching students through healthy and fun eating workshops in classrooms. By increasing the availability and acceptance of plant-based foods, we deliver a critical solution to a neglected area and revise the environmental and health landscape. Best Estimate of GHG Avoidance/Reduction of This Project (Tonnes CO2 Equivalent/Year):
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Economically, the changes proposed will be competitive and inclusive of smallholder farms because of a reduction of animal products - which leads to more jobs created for plant-farms . Also, reducing the amount of animal products purchased with municipal funds and serving more plant-forward options on the municipalities, will cut GHG emissions and reduce water footprints, all while saving money and offering healthier food. Beyond leveraging the city of Berlin‚ purchasing power, municipalities can inspire school districts, private institutions, restaurants and community residents to shift their purchases towards climate-friendly foods. Compared to the majority of climate mitigation strategies, plant-forward institutional food purchasing is a cost-effective approach that will downsize carbon footprint while improving the health of the public. A start locally is also a step globally. Also, every school that offers catering, covers the topic of plant-based nutrition into every classroom, reaching at the same time every gender. Empowering the food industry to go more into the direction of plant-based cooking also empowers women to take careers in a heavily male dominated sector which in turn boosts gender equality.
