Project Summary / Description:
Reforest The Tropics was formed in 1996 in response to an invitation from the Clinton Climate Action Plan to submit a proposal for climate mitigation projects. The proposal was approved by the Clinton Administration and subsequently accepted by the United Nations Framework on Climate Change - Activities Implemented Jointly. The 501c3 organization was officially established on March 22, 1996. The purpose of the program is to offer an improved reforestation model to mitigate the effects of climate change. Reforestation has suffered from a variety of historical challenges which the RTT program endeavors to overcome. The program commenced with three key research goals: 1) Develop a model whichsequesters approximately double the CO2e than conventional models. 2) Generate competitive income for landowners which allows them to participate in the project over the long-term. 3) Create a biodiverse forest which contributes to local ecosystems and creates habitat.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
RTT's education program in Connecticut delivers climate change education to traditionally underserved communities. Over half of the students receiving the education program through RTT qualify for free or reduced lunch programs, a key indicator of marginalilzed youth in the region. RTT's leadership is represented by women, with a woman President of our Board of Directors and multiple seats on both our Board of Directors and Leadership Council. In Costa Rica, employment is offered to members of vulnerable communities including indigenous communities. The jobs that the project creates fill an important need in villages which suffer from high unemployment.

Mission Statement:
Reforest The Tropics (RTT) is incorporated in the United States with operations exclusively in Costa Rica. RTT manages 467 hectares of reforestation projects on 18 distinct private farms located predominantly in the Atlantic Zone of Costa Rica. RTT plants exclusively mixed-species plantations. Biodiverse forests create valuable habitat but also serve as an additional mitigation against the risk of disease, pests, and other plagues. Between 70-80% of reforestation projects worldwide tend to be in the form of single species monocultures. These forests are easier to establish and maintain and are attractive to landowners because they offer relatively clear expectations in terms of economic productivity. We must target private landowners to plant enough forests to make a difference in the climate change equation and the RTT mixed-species model offers a notable improvement over the types of projects that are accessible to farmers in Costa Rica and throughout the tropics.
