Project Summary / Description:
Lambwe as a settlement boasts of a population of 11,079 people. This population largely depends on subsistence farming. The arable land used to receive sufficient rainfalls for human, crops and animal use. In the 3yrs in a row, Lambwe has experienced devastating drought and famine that saw livestock which was source of livelihood for the local wiped out and women trekking over 7 Km in search of water for both domestic and animal use. Having no way other alternative source of income; the local community turned to the forest for charcoal burning which led to rampant deforestation. Youths, who are the direct beneficiaries of this degraded environment, have had their socio-economic life threatened. The situation got worse. As a result, few friends of environment came together, brainstormed solutions to this menace and came up with strategies and models to counter the extreme, deforestation, degradation and climate change effects. The vehicle was dubbed Regreening Lambwe Initiative. The best model we adopted was Conservational Education Through Entertainment, christened Edutainment. The aim is to inculcate the culture of environmental protection and conservation amongst the youth women.
