Project Summary / Description:
After coming to the U.S. from Syria, Maen Mahfoud was shocked to see the level of poverty and hunger across the Bay Area. He learned that the U.S. wastes 40 percent of the food produced and saw so many people struggling to get a meal. His inspiration for Replate came when he saw a man in San Francisco reaching into the trash can for a sandwich. He wanted to get food to get surplus food to people in a more dignified and efficient way. He decided to started doing pick ups himself and donating to nearby nonprofits.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our work is a direct B2B food rescue service that provides logistics to enable businesses to donate their surplus food to communities in need. This service is not heavily available in most areas of the world and the platform is endlessly replicable. Food rescue is an effective way to reduce CO2 emissions from food going to landfill while acting as a public service getting food to nonprofits serving food insecure communities. We try our best to create the most efficient routes possible, while rescuing as much food as possible.
