Project Summary / Description:
Puerto Rico suffered the largest power outage in American history following Hurricane Maria‚ landfall on September 20, 2017. As government agencies struggled to restore basic services and deliver emergency supplies in the immediate aftermath, remote communities received little outside assistance two weeks after Maria. One month later, as millions lacked access to electricity and living conditions were rapidly deteriorating across Puerto Rico, RMI convened a multi-stakeholder workshop, leading data analysis, and building a shared understanding of near- and long-term priorities. The Renewable Microgrid Program is a systematic implementation of these local stakeholders‚ intention for local, reliable power.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Rocky Mountain Institute continuously strives for diversity within the team. We have established the Dive En initiative, whose mandate is to support diversity within the organization and provide space to discuss and learn about a variety of topics from unconscious bias, to microaggressions, to gender in the workplace. The Renewable Microgrid Program team consists of 50% women and 50% Puerto Ricans. We do not discriminate against genders, backgrounds, socioeconomic status, or any other aspect when making hiring decisions, but rather make an effort to maintain the diversity of our team.

Mission Statement:
The Renewable Microgrids Program seeks to improve energy resilience by fostering the development of renewable energy microgrids capable of supporting community energy needs, increasing local control of energy resources, and providing continued access to energy to satisfy critical loads. The Program will provide technical support, procurement facilitation and financial assistance for the development of solar microgrid projects of varying sizes and across economic and social sectors through a combination of grants and impact investments. Together with our partners Resilient Power Puerto Rico and Save the Children, we are working towards a robust, diverse and inclusive renewable energy sector, where the tools and resources for the development of renewable energy microgrids are available for the benefit of communities across Puerto Rico.
