Project Summary / Description:
We aim to sequester as much atmospheric carbon as possible both above land and as organic carbon into soil and facilitate/propagate/manage indigenous and exotic pioneer plant species with the end goal of re-establishing indigenous forest and restoring biodiversity on a 10 acre dry woodland property in New Zealand. Indigenous plant species are desirable for long term carbon storage, biodiversity, and fixing nitrogen into soils, but are slow to grow. Exotics mainly pinus radiata are quick to grow and offer valuable protection of vulnerable indigenous seedlings requiring shelter. However pines are not suitable for biodiversity or as a permanent forest sink.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Women, people of color, youth, climate-vulnerable communities have had virtually no say in addressing the climate crisis, with governments catering to the interests of big business. Their loud protests have fallen largely on deaf ears. By taking positive steps towards mitigation, while also cutting transport emissions, our project seeks to lead by example, and provide hope of a viable future for these groups, where governments have failed them. To show minority groups that while governments are largely ignoring their calls for action, private citizens are taking heed. Furthermore, our project is open to participation of all local minority groups who are keen and willing to do the right thing with regard climate change but do not have the resources to initiate anything substantive. The one resource they do have, their time, is what is needed to speed up our mitigation project.
