Project Summary / Description:
In 2012, the Dan Schnitzer and Allison Archambault were running the US non-profit EarthSpark International and were working on building Haiti's first pre-pay community microgrid. Believing that all new infrastructure should be clean, efficient, and smart, Dan and Allison were shocked to find that there was no low-cost, high-functionality smart meter available for them to buy to run their microgrid. Some brilliant and very generous friends and former colleagues agreed to pitch in to help build a meter that made sense for the EarthSpark grid, and after two years of in-field prototyping, SparkMeter was born. It turns out that solving the problem for one rural microgrid in Haiti - but by pulling in global best practices - meant that the early SparkMeter team was solving critical problems common to nearly all energy access microgrid operators. SparkMeter has grown to be the leading provider of smart metering systems that enable utilities to implement pre-paid billing and real-time monitoring and control on micro-grids, and we have found that our solution is quite relevant to large established utilities in emerging markets as well. We are now poised for growth, and we are raising our Series A in order to be able to scale to profitably serve emerging market utilities and in turn enable them to profitably expand electricity access to new or under-served communities.

Mission Statement:
SparkMeter‚ core value is opportunity: the opportunity for under-served communities to achieve great things. Our mission is to increase access to electricity in under-served communities. Electricity and the services derived from it unlock and create those opportunities. SparkMeter's low-cost smart meters make access to electricity possible in hard-to-reach places and under-served markets.
