Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
SFTT recognizes that many of the current challenges in reaching Tree Equity in Boston are related to inequitable distribution of trees and their ecosystem services throughout the city, the fractured or non-inclusive discourses and management of public green spaces, and consequently, the disproportionate impacts of climate change on low-income communities and communities of color. SFTT aims to address each of these challenges by working at the community level to teach residents why trees matter, to connect people to their local trees, to provide them resources to plant and care for trees on public and private land, and to amplify their shared voice and expertise throughout the city on tree-related actions and advocacy efforts. By increasing public awareness and education of urban forestry, SFTT hopes to foster the growth of a healthier and more diverse urban forest that provides residents with more vibrant communities, cleaner and cooler air, and increases spaces for mental respite and reflection.
