Project Summary / Description:
Restore atmospheric CO2 pressure to below 350 μatm. The mechanism involves locking up atmospheric carbon in mineral carbonate, which is the safest way to store carbon (storage as organic carbon is susceptible to oxidation, e.g., fires, drought, water level changes). On-land storage and/or removal is fraught with habitat destruction and/or ownership issues. In contrast, my proposed mechanism may be the only one with potential to be scaled up to a level that can actually help. Please see item #24 Comments.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our university (UMF), to paraphrase one of the parents of plate tectonics John F. Dewey, appears to be doing more for society on a per dollar basis than the high-priced, high-status private liberal arts colleges in America. This was Dewey‚ opinion expressed at the end of a week-long field trip in 2012. Our campus is known within the state system for its attention to diversity. For an institution based in rural Maine, we attract a high proportion of traditionally underrepresented groups (e.g., gender, immigrants, low socio-economic status). One goal of this proposal is to procure funding for undergraduate research (i.e., internships) to advance the project. I also incorporate this research in my teaching, thereby reaching this audience.

None. I strongly hope that society prioritizes getting at the root of the problem, which is decreasing emissions. I am unsure that it is wise to widely publicize CDR efforts. The public may get the wrong idea that technology will automatically fix everything.
