Project Summary / Description:
Renewable energy is being widely deployed, driven by environmental concerns and technology advancements. However, a high penetration of renewables could potentially compromise operational reliability and security of the power grid because of extensive variability and uncertainty, as recently observed in California and Texas. We propose new approaches to comprehensively understand the maximum potential penetration level of renewables the existing grid could accommodate without compromising reliability, and new technologies and tools to further boost the ability of existing grid in accommodating deeper penetration. Such approaches include advanced models and algorithms to effectively enhance system flexibilities (through optimized deployment and operation of gas-fired generators, hydro units, energy storage, and demand response, etc.) for mitigating uncertainties of renewables and enhancing their effective integration.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Through the research and development funds supported by federal agents and the industry, Dr. Wu has recruited a good number of graduate and undergraduate students to conduct research and educational training in the power and energy area. Over the past 9 years, Dr. Wu has supervised 1 female Post Doc, 1 female graduate student, 1 female undergraduate student, 1 female visiting faculty, and 3 female visiting scholars.
