In recent years, building sector, compared with the industrial sector (31%) and the transportation sector (29%), consume 40% energy in US. Accordingly, the energy consumption percentage for buildings in China is more than 27% of the total, and it exhibits a growing tendency with the increased demand for indoor thermal comfort. Glass envelopes are always the short board of building energy efficiency compared with opaque envelopes. It motivates us to improve building energy performance via innovative facades. A climatic adaptive facade named as Transparent Water Storage Envelope (TWSE) is proposed for a small building energy renovation project. TWSEs embody the concept of combining natural lighting during daytime, passive cooling in summer and passive heating in winter together. The concept is developed by producing an envelope mainly consists of transparent water storage containers, adjustable exterior shading devices and water supply and return pipes integrated into the building water system. The main part of the system is an array of modular transparent water containers integrated into building envelope frames, serving as both façade units and auxiliary water cisterns of a building. Distinguished from conventional water walls, TWSEs consist of featured water storage containers that have stratified inner volume divided by convection baffle layers. When the containers are empty of water during cold days, stratified air gaps form inside simultaneously for improving insulation. TWSEs have water cores and pipes that enable absorbed heat transferred by fluid flow and dissipate quickly compared with solid thermal mass walls, which is beneficial for cooling load reduction.
