Project Summary / Description:

The purpose of the project is to develop a more efficient solar energy farm using heliostats incorporating concentrating photovoltaic and concentrating solar power systems. In 2010 the price of solar panels was high, and the efficiency of solar cells was low. To overcome the price and low efficiency of solar panels a concept was developed to increase the amount of energy obtained from sunlight by producing electrical and thermal energy. Development and bench testing of the concepts were conducted and small test rigs. Review of the system identified the need to remove the rotation of pipework or flexible hoses from the thermal fluid piping system. From the review a new concept was developed that utilised a static thermal receiver. The development of the prototype is based on this new concept.

The construction of solar farms in the regional areas with high direct normal irradiance would provide the local communities with employment opportunities. Manufacturing of the heliostats would be done in the local regions requiring skilled workers and fabricators. This will require the training of workers such as women, people of color and youth. The money earned working in the factories would provide the wealth that can aid vulnerable communities with investment in schools, hospitals and water infrastructure and alleviate the vulnerability to climate change.
