Project Summary / Description:
Energy, specifically electrification, is the backbone of development. However, globally one person in five lacks access to electricity. Of those without access to energy, 84% live in rural areas, such as in the villages on the Thailand-Myanmar border region. These villages, located on remote forested mountains, do not have basic grid-connected electricity resulting in both short and long-term health and safety risks, and decreased productivity. Our business solutions overcome barriers that currently prevent widespread and sustained utilization of clean solar energy technologies in rural areas.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The leader of the enterprise, Mrs. Salinee, has a strong interest in engaging women in workplace, training, and local communities. She believes that the presence of women in all of the enterprise‚ activities will improve its performance. Women bring different, yet positive perspectives into operation teams, trainings, and meetings. The enterprise tries to balance the number of male and female staff members, especially the core management team. Though in some situations, the enterprise faces challenges in recruiting more female training participants. However, the team is determined to search for ways to engage more women in the near future. SunSawang works in the ethnic minority areas. Our team members are comprised of Karen and Hmong. We also hire and provide jobs to people from these hill tribe groups.Since SunSawang aims to increase the sales of solar home systems to 3,000 systems and lanterns to 10,000 units in the next five years, the total revenues and the net income after taxes are projected to be $626,000 and $155,000, respectively. The enterprise will create local employment and strengthen rural communities by hiring and training 17 local technicians and sales representatives in the next five years.
