Project Summary / Description:

Sway accelerates the transition to electric shared mobility through mobility hubs: EV carshare that complements micromobility along with public transit - to reduce VMT, personal vehicle ownership, and GHG emissions. We do this predominantly in low and moderate income neighborhoods both to serve the needs of the community and leapfrog younger drivers directly to EVs.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:

Sway exclusively uses electric vehicles, purchases RECs to offset the emissions from the electricity used as fuel in the vehicles, and the service removes between 9 and 13 private vehicles from the road (UC Berkeley). With the transportation sector now the largest contributor to GHG emissions (EPA, 2022), the faster we can accelerate the transition to EVs the better it will be for society. To the extent we can combine this with decreased vehicle ownership, fewer vehicle miles travelled, reductions in single occupancy vehicle trips, and increased mode share (especially to public transit), these benefits increase logarithmically.

We empower our users (and the communities in which we operate) by providing increased access to mobility, experience and jobs with new technologies, and environmental benefits like cleaner air. As these communities are often low and moderate income and/or rural in nature, and therefore typically more climate-vulnerable than the surrounding areas, those that benefit from the program operating in the community are often people of color. As women in many cases in these communities disproportionately take the types of trips the program is best suited to - grocery shopping, dropping off children at school, errands - they likewise disproportionately benefit from the program. Women also are frequent consumers of healthcare services, from womens health to prenatal and child well visits, for which the vehicles are well suited.
