Project Summary / Description:
Proposal for Beekeeping and Systematic Community reforestation as gear to reduce greenhouse gas in the atmosphere ( Carbon absorption) Forests contain substantial carbon (C) in the soil, trees and other vegetation, and globally they are hugely important to the carbon, water and energy cycles. Forest resources are sources of greenhouse gas and sink of carbon dioxide (CO2). Despite of these importance forests in Rufiji district are facing number of challenges one being deforestation and forest degradation and this is common because communities depend direct on the forest to sustain their livelihood. Degradation of forests resulted due to clearing of natural forests for new farming areas, illegal timber harvesting, irrational charcoal making and fuel wood extraction. These practices led TAYEN to introduce reforestation project in Rufiji district with the interest of protecting existing trees and also ensure the newly planted tree seedlings survive to maturity. This award will build on the ongoing project to sensitize and incentivize communities to conserve and protect forests and other natural resources in their Village by implementing the following activities: 1. Raise awareness to the community on the current practices on the forest degradation. 2. Community Participatory Forest Management Plans through village land use plans. 3. Capacitating and training the community to participate in the Beekeeping enterprises 4. Enhancing the village tree necessary to promote collective Community tree planting in their Village Land Forest Reserves. The project will be implemented in collaboration with Local Government Authorities and villages government as the main institutions responsible for sustaining the project outcomes. Also the reforestation efforts will involve local stakeholders from the very beginning of the project.
